Gaming isn’t just entertainment - it can be a gateway to a career in tech, especially for Māori and Pasifika youth, who make up a tiny percentage of the industry in NZ. The industry has made progress, but there’s still a long road ahead. Dhaya Sivakumar, CIO of Livestock Improvement Corporation (LIC), shared some insights in a recent CIO Leadership Live interview about the barriers to entry. One key issue? The challenges start early. Many young women face hurdles in tech classes, often feeling out of place in male-dominated environments. And for Māori and Pasifika, the lack of representation creates a deeper problem: without visible role models or exposure to tech careers, many don’t see a pathway into the industry at all. Dhaya is taking action through a charitable trust, working to introduce Māori and Pasifika youth to technology. His approach is simple: meet young people where they are. By hosting gaming events in South and West Auckland, he’s sparking interest in tech careers while engaging with parents and caregivers - because many don’t even realise tech is an option for their children. It's so heartening to hear from CIOs who do more than just talk about diversity. We need to actively show young people the opportunities available and break down the barriers that keep them out. That starts with visibility, mentorship, and community engagement. How else can we make tech careers accessible to a broader range of people? #DiversityInTech #MāoriInTech #PasifikaInTech #TechLeadership #FutureOfWork #Inclusion #CIOLeadershipLive CIO Online
